Terrenceville Community Beach Survey Workshop

Terrenceville Community Beach Survey Workshop

The Placentia Bay Ocean Debris Survey (PODS) team travelled to the small town of Terrenceville on Newfoundland’s south coast this month at the request of some concerned community members. Community member Jim Hickey reached out to the PODS team to express the community’s frustration with the constant influx of marine debris to the town’s central beach.

The PODS team spent four days with the community discussing their marine debris landscape and conducting a beach survey workshop, where participants used the Marine Debris Tracker application to record information about debris as it was removed from the beach. In two days of beach cleaning, over 10,000 large pieces of debris were removed from the shoreline, for an average debris density of 14 items/metre. The results from the survey will contribute to an ongoing record of debris that is hereafter lead by the community of Terrenceville. This record will hopefully enable the community to take action and speak out about top debris contributors in their region.
